I'm getting into vegetable dyeing: my harvests

Yellow onion skins

After the reading stage, I moved on to the harvesting stage. My idea is to recycle waste and not destroy the plants that I appreciate. So I’m going to avoid using the roots…. unless the plant is invasive.

Let’s play the game “in my kitchen, there is…”

In what I throw away, what vegetable dye can I use? The most common and which I love to add to almost everything I cook is YELLOW ONION. The useful part in dyeing is the colored skin. The problem is how much to store before thinking about dyeing! It takes 300g of onion peels to dye 100g of wool!!! Which makes a lot of onion soups…. and fortunately it is appreciated at home. The color we are supposed to obtain ranges from orange-yellow to red.

I don't use much red onion , but I still store the peels. We expect a yellow-green .

Although I didn't find any writings, I kept the shallot peels too...

The onion skins are stored in a large box.

An amazing source of coloring is AVOCADO . I keep the skin and the core, as they are consumed. It takes (6 avocados) to dye 100g of wool. The expected color is “ rosewood ”.

And in my garden?

I didn't know that so many treasures were hidden in my garden.

It's time to harvest RHUBARB . From the stem, I will make pies and from the leaf I will obtain a bright yellow but also a dark khaki green . The root aged at least 3 years is also used to obtain an orange . I chopped the leaves so they would dry faster. They can be used fresh or dried.

Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo In the stone walls, I let CELDONIA just in case one of us has a wart to treat. From its stems a yellow juice flows which quickly turns orange. Applied daily to the skin, it makes warts disappear. It was while browsing the internet that I found that you could get a nice yellow color with the leaves and stems.

Chelidonium Majus

I picked some FERN I hope to add green to my color palette.

Geranium Robertianum or Robertianum

Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo The color will be a surprise in shades of beige provided you harvest enough.  I will also harvest the just faded flowers of the IRIS  and hope to get some  blue .  With the iris rhizome, we can obtain black .

Let's go back to the orchard! WALNUT tree unfolds . When the leaves have blossomed, I will harvest an armful of them to obtain a tawny brown . The CHERRY TREE is growing too big and we plan to prune a few branches that are too high, after harvesting the fruit of course! I should get a shade of pink .

Here's something to color beautiful skeins and I'm sure I haven't exhausted the possibilities.

What about skeins of wool? no sheep on the horizon, no... My first tests will be on wool from the Bergerie de Scheuerwald: https://www.facebook.com/Bergerie-de-Scheuerwald-1395336320766947/ . I also ordered skeins from the Alysse Création website: http://alysse-creations.info/laine-et-tricot/fil-et-laines/laine-de-mouton.html
